Erziyan Village

Erziyan Village, Yuanjiaxi, Sichuan Province, China

We completed our first elementary school in Erziyan Village. Erziyan is located about seven hours by car south of the Sichuan Province's capital city Chengdu. After the last 1 1/2 hour ride up the steep tea terrace mountains, we walked for 3 hours through boot sucking mud. The local village leader and teacher told us that the 3 hour walk takes them 30 minutes. You might enjoy a news segment televised on the local Mabian TV, showing our visit to Yuanjiaxi.

Erziyan is in the midst of Yi country. There are 3.25 million Yi people in southern China. They are hospitable. They care for their children and their education. When we spoke to them about where they would put a new school to replace the old one, which was becoming dangerously unsafe. He stated at the top of the mountain where the existing school was "because it is closer to the sun".
